Holographic foil cards, explained
What actually makes a foil card shine — and how the effect is recreated on screen so your custom cards get it too.
Why physical foil cards shimmer
A physical holo card has a layer of micro-embossed foil under the ink. The embossing splits light into shifting bands of color, so the pattern seems to move as you tilt the card. Different embossing patterns produce different personalities: linear refractor beams, starfield 'cosmos' sparkles, vertical sheens, crackle textures.
That tilt-to-shimmer relationship is the whole magic. A static rainbow gradient printed on paper doesn't read as foil — movement does.
How digital holo effects recreate it
On screen, the tilt is replaced by your cursor (or your phone's gyroscope): as the pointer moves, the highlight and color bands sweep across the card the way light would. Card Forge renders foil as a real dynamic layer — a light component (the moving sheen) composited with a pattern component (the texture), which is why a galaxy foil and a rainbow foil move differently instead of being two static textures.
Because it's a live layer and not a baked image, the foil survives everywhere the card goes: the share link, the embed, the 3D viewer, the pack-opening reveal.
The main foil families
Names vary between games and manufacturers, but most foils fall into a few families you'll recognize instantly:
- Refractor — parallel light beams sweeping across the frame; the classic 'rare holo' look
- Galaxy / cosmos — a starfield sparkle that twinkles as the light moves
- Rainbow — broad spectrum bands across the whole surface
- Aurora — soft curtains of color, slower and moodier than rainbow
- Gold / silver stamp — metallic relief on names and strokes rather than the full surface
Using foil well (restraint is the trick)
Foil is a rarity signal. If everything shines, nothing does — the strongest sets reserve full-surface foil for the top tier and use subtler finishes (a gold-stamped name, a glossy sheen) on mid tiers. Match the foil to the card's mood too: galaxy suits cosmic and dark art, refractor suits classic fantasy, gold stamp suits anything ceremonial.
One more practical tip: foils read best over darker art. A bright white background swallows the effect; a night sky makes it sing.
