Make recognition badges your team will actually keep

A kudos message scrolls away in an hour. A legendary card of the time they saved the release lives on the desk forever.

Recognition works when it's specific and durable — and most workplace kudos are neither. A badge card fixes both: 'Incident Whisperer — resolved the 3AM outage, 2026-06-14' is specific, and a card (printed, or a share link in the team channel) doesn't scroll away.

Teams that run on inside jokes are sitting on a full set: the deploy-on-Friday survivor badge, the meeting-that-should-have-been-an-email award, the legendary tier reserved for actually shipping the thing.

How to do it

01

Define your badge tiers

Commons for everyday wins (great review, unblocked a teammate), rares for real saves, one legendary per quarter for the big one. Scarcity keeps it meaningful.

02

Make the counter stat count

The Badge template has a stat slot: 'Incidents survived: 12', 'PRs reviewed: 340'. Real numbers make it an artifact, not a compliment.

03

Date and name the deed in the flavor text

Recognition without specifics is noise. One line: what they did, when.

04

Deliver in public

Drop the share link in the team channel, or print it and leave it on their desk. The card is the applause.

05

Keep a team binder

A binder of every badge awarded becomes the team's actual history — better than any retrospective doc.

Small things that make it great

  • Peer-awarded beats manager-awarded — let anyone mint a common
  • The joke badges carry the program; the sincere legendary lands because of them
  • Departing teammate? The whole team makes their card. Guaranteed tears.
